Autumn Gardening

There are so many things to look forward to in autumn and this year is no exception! This week’s focus is on planting and harvesting the fall vegetables.

Planting the Garlic

Garlic cloves are planted in late October so they can be harvested in mid-July.

Each clove is planted 4 inches apart and 4 inches deep. The soil was prepared in September with cow manure and a bone meal fertilizer.

The whole area will be covered with 6 inches of straw from our autumn display at the bottom of our driveway.

The cloves will lay dormant throughout the winter under the straw and snow.

Harvesting Brussels Sprouts

California might supply 90% of the country’s Brussels sprouts, but our front yard supplies 100% of ours in late autumn!

I absolutely love these tiny orbs of flavor!

They belong to the family of cruciferous vegetables, so they are packed full of nutrition and offer many health benefits.

They are very versatile and can be enjoyed boiled, roasted, sautéed and even grated raw in salads and slaws.

Digging Up the Root Vegetables

It’s time to harvest the remaining beets and carrots. Soon the ground will freeze and digging will be difficult. This time of year we have to watch the extended forecast for snowstorms. Ideally, you want to harvest these root vegetables before the first snowfall.
