🚨 Under the Radar River News 🚨

It might not be news to you, but it is news to me!

Blah, blah, blah…

It feels like everything is closing in the little city of Ogdensburg, NY. Over the past few years we’ve lost restaurants, retail stores and small businesses. The most recent hits have been devastating to our rural community.

The local hospital appears to be struggling, as evidenced by a decrease in services and a mass layoff of employees, with additional layoffs anticipated.

A pillar bank of our community has announced it is closing. Our only sporting apparel store is high-tailing it out of here.

We’ve already lost an adult home, nursing home, two in-patient rehabilitation centers, and an out-patient rehab unit. Our only chain retail department store, Peebles, is gone. Our highly anticipated Aldi’s expansion was reduced to a disappointing remodel.

Our city is looking more and more like a ghost town, filled with large empty buildings with boarded up windows.

I realize we are not alone in this mess. People are struggling everywhere. I can’t complain. We are still better off than so many other countries. Also, I am proud to be a New Yorker and North Country strong.

The only thing we can do now is to stick it out and help our neighbors and community members as best we can. Hang in there, North Country. Things will get better. We must remain optimistic.
