Positive Outlook

“Positive anything is better than negative nothing.”

Elbert Hubbard

When you wake up each morning you have an important choice to make. You can choose to have a good day, or a bad day. It seems simple, but it is so easy to let negative thoughts invade your mind.

The more adversity we face in our lives, the more important it is to maintain a positive attitude. I believe it all comes down to having faith that things will work out.

If you find yourself experiencing an occasional bout of negativity, here are a couple of ways to stay positive!

Limit News Hours and Stop “Doomscrolling”

One upon a time, we watched the news twice a day. It mainly covered local events, like weather and traffic. This news was mostly uplifting and prepared us for our workday. Today we are bombarded with sensationalized negative news. People are glued to their social media and obsessed with learning about every single horrific event from around the globe. The Merrimam-Webster dictionary even addresses this morbid obsession:

“Doomscrolling and doomsurfing are new terms referring to the tendency to continue to surf or scroll through bad news, even though that news is saddening, disheartening, or depressing.”

Reprogram and replace this negative brainwashing with positive, happy, healthful scrolling. I like Hippie Peace Freaks, Karma Panda and Buddha Groove. These sites will calm your nerves and lift your attitude.

Surround Yourself With Positive People

Just one positive confidante will lift you up. Find that person who always sees the good in everyone. I am lucky to be surrounded by loving, supportive optimists! 💕

Positivity is contagious, but also be warned, so is negativity. Some of us tend let negative people bring us down. Don’t let them suck you into their downward spiraling vibe.

If at all possible, keep those negative people away! One-by-one, I’ve distanced myself from them. I’ve blocked Facebook accounts and ignored texts and phone calls. Do not argue with them, just step away. Eventually, they will get the message.

Avoid people who gossip about others. I promise you this: if they feel comfortable gossiping to you they will have no problems gossiping about you. These people are harbingers of negativity.

Engage In Positive Activities

I’m not going to apologize or feel guilty for all my leisure time these days. I front-loaded my life with career, education, family and community just so I can enjoy my time now.

Engage in activities that benefit your mind and health. Start a yoga class! Get out in nature every day. Try something new. Learn a musical instrument! Read a book. Listen to uplifting music. Learn something new every day.

Simply put, pursue those activities that bring you peace, joy and happiness!

It is my belief that positive people experience better mental, physical and spiritual health. Your positive attitude is key to making you and your loved ones a little more joyful. So get out there and spread around some positivity today!
