Merky Monday Music Reviews

Rebecca Cross

Ok, this is my summer 2021 obsession….Merky Monday Music Reviews. This is a vlog hosted by Rebecca Ryan Cross, as part of a weekly installment of the Riffing on Horror site out of New Jersey. I know what you are thinking…this location has nothing to do with the river and horror rock has nothing to do with peace, love and harmony. Well yes it does! These pod casts brings me total peace and a sense of fun on otherwise boring Monday nights. And also, I cannot look away. She’s mesmerizing!

Each week, after introducing a band and a brief history of membership, Ms Cross covers the songs from one album of a chosen horror band. She plays a few small excerpts and performs a rating. What sets her apart from other music reviewers is her kick-ass “take no prisoners” edge. Also, she unapologetically infuses various facets of her life, including smoking a little (and perfectly legal) weed, applying goth and glam style makeup, and doing her own tattoos and piercings! How cool is that?

From Murder Dolls to Son of Sam she shares her knowledge of and love for the horror genre. Yes, I’m 60, but I also have a love for this! Currently I’m listening to Sirion, with lead singer, Biko Wright from the television series “Alone.”

Ms. Cross brings an edgy hippie vibe and aptly enlightens her viewers on the evolution of the genre of horror rock. From its inception in the late 1970s, a time cursed with the rise of soft rock and disco, until now; horror rock, also loosely related to horror punk or death rock, has been a constant and undeniable musical undercurrent with a feverishly loyal following.

Masterfully blending old notes of horror rock with the new, Cross unites generations from the millennials to the baby boomers. She’s an old soul, for sure, and she is totally on my radar for music genre influencers! I look forward to her show each week. She gives me a reason to look forward to Mondays!
